WEST WINDSOR, NJ – For the second consecutive season, all six players in the Monmouth University men's tennis line-up earned at least one All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference honor, the league office announced at the annual banquet tonight. Head Coach Alex Kasarov was named MAAC Coach of the Year after leading the Hawks to a 7-0 MAAC record in his first season, including five sweeps. All three doubles teams earned First Team honors, while sophomore Alberto Giuffrida (Catania, Italy/Lincoln) was named to the First Team at #5 singles.
Four Hawks earned All-MAAC Second Team honors at singles, including Przemyslaw Filipek (Bedzin, Poland/Second Lo [Silesia]) who has earned All-MAAC #2 singles honors three times in his career. Ale Gomez Estrada (Guayaquil, Ecuador/PERT) was named to the Second Team at #3 singles after going a perfect 7-0 in MAAC play, and now had six total conference post-season accolades in his career. Senior Christian Vieira (Houston, TX/Memorial) pulled in Second Team honors at #5 singles with a 6-1 MAAC record, while freshman Sergio Martinez (Veracruz, Mexico/Bachillerato IEDEP) rounded out the accolades with All-MAAC Second Team recognition at #6 singles, going 5-1 in the conference on the season.
The duo of Filipek and Gomez were voted as the top #1 doubles team with a 6-1 conference record, while Nicola Pipoli (Polignano a Mare, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Sante Simone) and Giuffrida received the same honor at #2 doubles after a perfect 5-0 MAAC record. The Hawks rounded out the sweep of First Team doubles honors, with Vieira and Vikrant Dahiya (Haryana, India/Dayanand Anglo-Vedic Public School) being voted as the top #3 doubles team in the conference after posting a 10-3 record, including 6-0 in the conference.
Last week, defending champion Monmouth secured the number one seed in the MAAC Championships, which begins tomorrow with the semifinals. The Hawks will take on #4 Fairfield at 2:00 PM. Last season, the Hawks trailed 3-0 to No. 2 Quinnipiac in the MAAC Men's Tennis Championship Match before completing an improbable comeback to win the match, 4-3, and earn its first-ever team-flighted conference tournament championship.
