WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Monmouth University head coach Jenny Palmateer has announced the signing of Spain native Carol Arfinengo to the women's basketball team. The 5'11 forward will join the team next fall ahead of the 2017-2018 season.
“We're just so happy to have Carol join our Monmouth family,” said Palmateer. “She's a great fit for us in so many ways, both on and off the court. We can't wait to have her here with us next season.”
A prolific three-point shooter, Arfinengo can play any position on the court. She currently plays meaningful minutes for top club team Rivas Ecopolis, a team that sits atop the standings in Spain's Liga 2. Arfinengo also plays for the Basket Rivas junior team, averaging 19 points per game. She was recently named to the all-star team at “Zona Rookie Summer League”, which is the most prestigious summer camp in Spain.
Former coaches have described Arfinengo as a multi-skilled forward who likes to get teammates involved. With the ability to play both inside and outside, she is a sharpshooter that can also put her back to the basket and use strength to put up points.
A black belt in Judo, former instructors laud Arfinengo's toughness and passion. “No player I've ever coached has the passion of Carol,” said one former coach. “She loves the game and practices every single day to get better.”
Before Arfinengo joins the squad next season, the 2016-17 Hawks will open on Sunday when they travel to Moon Township, PA to take on the Robert Morris Colonials at 1:00 PM.
