Despite a 40-24 advantage in the second and third quarters, Monmouth University’s women’s basketball team was outlasted by Providence on December 21 by a score of 62-58. The Friars took a 20-7 lead after the first quarter, and the Hawks controlled the second and third quarters before narrowly missing their fourth straight win. Senior Tyese Purvis led the Hawks with 15 points, and classmate Christina Mitchell scored 14 points with nine rebounds on the night. The loss dropped Monmouth to 5-6 on the season, and the team will resume conference play when they host Marist on January 2. Freshman Kayla Shaw comes in to the game having scored in double-figures in four straight games, with 18 three-pointers over that span. The Hawks will host three conference games within the next six days, as they welcome Fairfield on January 4 and Saint Peter’s on January 7.

SCOUTING THE MARIST RED FOXES

Marist improved to 2-1 in MAAC play after its 71-55 win over Fairfield on Friday. Sophomore guard Maura Fitzpatrick led all scorers with 24 points in the win. Freshman Rebekah Hand leads the team with 14.8 points per game and 6.8 rebounds per game. Hand has won MAAC Rookie of the Week honors five times this season. Teammate Allie Clement is adding 12.3 points per game in three games played, while Fitzpatrick is also averaging 12.3 points per game. The Red Foxes’ other MAAC win came against Manhattan on November 29, when Hand scored 25 points in the 62-47 triumph.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. MARIST

With 38 games under their belts, the Hawks and Red Foxes are deadlocked at 19 wins each. The series began in 1981-82, and was reignited when Monmouth joined the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in 2013-14. Since joining the MAAC, Monmouth is 1-5 against Marist. The teams split last year’s series when they played twice in seven days. In West Long Branch, the Hawks bested the Red Foxes, 60-52, as Christina Mitchell grabbed 12 rebounds and registered a career-high six blocks. Tyese Purvis notched 11 points, five rebounds, and four assists in the win while McKinzee Barker secured a career-high 11 rebounds.
