GIBSON ADDS POSTSEASON ACCOLADES
WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Monmouth University women’s soccer redshirt freshman Madie Gibson (Cape May, NJ / Lower Cape May) added to her postseason accolades with a pair of honors from Double G Sports.
Nominees for the awards were received by readers and followers and the finalists were then decided by the staff at DoubleGSports.com. The annual Double G Sports Awards honor the performances of teams and individuals in the Greater NYC and Greater Philadelphia areas throughout the calendar year.
Gibson was voted the 2016 Double G Sports Awards for College Female Athlete of the Year and College Freshman of the Year. Other finalists for the College Female Athlete of the Year included Breanna Stewart (UConn basketball), Charlotte Veitner (UConn field hockey) and Erin Smith (Rutgers soccer). Gibson was selected the College Freshman of the Year ahead of Nicole Whitley (Rutgers women’s soccer), Jalen Brunson (Villanova men’s basketball) and Marisa Adelman (William Patterson women’s soccer).
Gibson, who was also named the ECAC and MAAC Rookie of the Year, led the conference in goals (12) and points (33) in her rookie season for the Hawks. She was one of four Monmouth players to start in every game in 2016 and after opening the year as a defender, Gibson moved to the forward position where she was an All-MAAC First Team choice. Her 12 goals were the most for a Monmouth freshman since Andrea Lopez scored 13 in 2006.
As a team, Monmouth was selected as a finalist for College Women’s Team of the Year and Gabriella Cuevas was a finalist for the Inspirational Athlete of the Year award.
