WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS LATE TO RIDER THURSDAY, 71-69

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Despite leading for over 38 minutes of the game, the Monmouth University women’s basketball team notched a season-high 29 turnovers and were edged by Rider on Thursday night, 71-69. The Hawks shot a season-high 50.0% (26-52) from the field while holding the Broncs to just 36.7% (22-60), but Rider went 23-29 from the free throw line while Monmouth went 6-8. Senior Tyese Purvis scored 17 points (5-6 3-pt FG) in the loss, while freshman Kayla Shaw hit another three triples for 11 total points. Shaw now has 65 threes on the season, just 15 short of the single-season program record with eight games to play. The Hawks will travel to Quinnipiac on Saturday for a 1:00 PM conference matchup.

-Monmouth used a 12-0 run in the first quarter to jump out to an eventual 20-13 lead after the first frame. Kayla Quintana scored nine points in the quarter, marking her second highest scoring output since she scored 16 points in the win at Lehigh.
-Rider began to battle back in the second quarter, cutting the Monmouth lead to just two at 35-33, as the Hawks failed to score in the last 2:15 of the quarter.
-The Hawks rattled off another 12-0 run in the third quarter, building a 47-35 lead with 5:36 remaining in the frame.
-The Broncs once again started to come back after the MU run, coming to within five at 49-44. Shaw’s third three-pointer to end the quarter made it 54-46 after three.
-Purvis hit her fifth three-pointer with 6:25 left in the game. The shot gave Monmouth a 62-52 lead.
-Rider went on a 15-5 run over the next 5:57 to take its first lead of the game with 28.1 seconds remaining. Rosa Graham answered for Monmouth as her layup with 7.3 seconds left tied the game at 69.
-Rider’s Robin Perkins hit two free throws with 3.1 seconds left, and MU could not finish on the final possession, ending in the 71-69 loss.
-Monmouth’s 29 turnovers were a season-high, as it registered 27 in the loss against Hartford on November 26.
-Shaw’s 11 points gave her double-figure scoring for the 13th time this season.
-After a 54-46 lead heading into the third quarter, Monmouth was outscored in the fourth quarter, 25-15.
-Rider had the 33-12 advantage in points off turnovers.
-The Hawks shot 64.7% (11-17) from beyond the arc.
-Taylor Nason has grabbed 34 rebounds over the last three games.
-Alaina Jarnot scored six points and added six assists and four rebounds in the loss.
-Monmouth’s bench outscored the opponent’s bench for the 19th time in 21 games this season, holding the 40-7 advantage on Thursday night.
