WOMEN’S BASKETBALL NEVER TRAILS IN 58-42 WIN AT SAINT PETER’S

JERSEY CITY, NJ – Powered by ten different scorers and three in double-figures, the Monmouth University women’s basketball never trailed to defeat Saint Peter’s on Friday night, 58-42. The Hawks held the opponent to its lowest scoring total of the season while holding the Peacocks to just 16-58 (27.6%) from the floor and 2-13 (15.4%) from deep. Monmouth also forced 24 turnovers in the win and grabbed 47 rebounds. Eleven Hawks played at least 10 minutes on the night, and Kayla Shaw’s four three-pointers led the way for a game-high 12 points. Monmouth will return home for a 2:00 PM matchup with Iona on Sunday.

-Kayla Shaw gave Monmouth the early 6-0 lead after hitting two three-pointers.
-The Hawks jumped out to a 11-0 lead and held Saint Peter’s without a basket until just 5:06 remained in the first quarter.
-After Tyese Purvis’ second triple of the first quarter, Saint Peter’s was forced to call its second timeout with 1:48 left in the frame as Monmouth led, 19-4. The score would remain the same at the end of the first.
-The Hawks did not let up in the second quarter, once again holding Saint Peter’s to under 10 points. Monmouth went into the locker room at halftime leading 29-13 as it held the Peacocks to just 5-32 (15.6%) from the field and 1-9 (11.1%) from deep.
-Monmouth built its largest lead of 21 in the third quarter, but Saint Peter’s cut the deficit to 14 heading into the fourth quarter at 42-28.
-Despite several comeback attempts by the Peacocks, Monmouth outscored Saint Peter’s in the fourth quarter 16-14 to pull out the win.
-The Hawks held Saint Peter’s to just four points in the first quarter and nine points in the second quarter, heading into halftime with the 29-13 lead.
-Shaw went into double-figures for the 14th time this season after her 12-point output. Her four three-pointers give her 70 on the season, just 10 away from the single-season program record.
-Helena Kurt scored in double-figures for the second time this season, and the first since the season opener at Robert Morris on November 13.
-Taylor Nason added 10 points, six rebounds, and three steals on the night, going into double-digit scoring for the fourth time this year.
-Monmouth snaps a three-game losing streak.
-The Hawks bench outscored the opponent’s bench for the 21st time in 23 games this season, holding the 28-10 advantage on Friday night.
-Christina Mitchell pulled down 11 rebounds in the game, notching double-digit rebounds for the fifth time this season.
