NOTES AND QUOTES
“It was a well-balanced game. We focused on not letting them get to the foul line on the defensive end, and we were able to rebound with them as well which was huge. When we’re able to get the stops and rebounds, we can push the pace a little bit, which I think is one of our biggest strengths. When we push the pace, we can usually put up some points.” - Monmouth head coach Jenny Palmateer
“We needed to play hard from the beginning to the end. We just kept pushing it and played our hardest, so I knew we could pull out the win.” – Freshman guard Alaina Jarnot
-Jarnot, Kayla Shaw, and McKinzee Barker all hit triples within the first 2: of the game to help the Hawks jump out to a 9-4 lead. Another three from Tyese Purvis helped Monmouth take the 17-9 lead after the first quarter.
-Monmouth kept it going in the second quarter, leading by as many as 21 with 4:58 left at 34-13. Iona began to close the gap after a 10-0 run, but Purvis’ second triple made it 37-23. Heading into halftime, Monmouth led 40-25 behind 8-14 shooting from three-point range.
-Iona slowly battled back in the third quarter led by Alexis Lewis’ 14 points and four rebounds. Two tough, late buckets from Alexa Middleton made it 55-48 heading into the final frame.
-Barker took over in the fourth quarter, scoring 11 points while going 8-8 from the free throw line. She is now 20-21 (95%) on the season from the line.
-The Hawks had their second-best shooting day of the season, totaling 48.1% on 25-52 from the floor. Iona shot just 33.9% (21-62) in the game.
-Barker’s 16 points matched a career high. She previously scored 16 in the win over Marist on January 2 this year. Her 11 points in the fourth quarter, including the eight free throws, were the most points in a single quarter in her career.
-Barker and Shaw both totaled three steals in the win.
-Shaw hit two more three-pointers to give her 72 on the season. She needs just eight more to set the single-season program record with five games remaining.
-The Hawks bench outscored the opponent’s bench for the 22nd time in 24 games this season, holding the 28-10 advantage for the second straight game.
Monmouth will remain home after three days off, as it hosts Manhattan this Thursday at 5:00 PM. This will be the first meeting between the Hawks and Jaspers this season. The contest will be broadcast on ESPN3.
