WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Facing the highest shooting percentage from an opponent this season, the Monmouth University women’s basketball team was defeated by Manhattan on Thursday night, 75-61. The Jaspers went 30-51 (58.8%) from the field and 8-15 (53.3%) from long range, as the Hawks dropped to 12-13 (7-9 MAAC) on the season. The two teams totaled 53 turnovers on the night and both registered 31 rebounds. Sophomore guard McKinzee Barker scored in double-figures for the second consecutive game and sixth time this season, while freshman Kayla Shaw hit two more three-pointers, totaling 10 points. Shaw now has 74 total threes this season, and needs just six more to tie the single-season program record with four games remaining. Monmouth will travel to Poughkeepsie, NY this Saturday for a 5:00 PM matchup with Marist.

-After her career-high 19 points against Iona on Sunday, Alaina Jarnot picked up where she left off in the first quarter on Thursday, scoring seven points while adding three rebounds and two assists. Heading into halftime, she totaled nine points, four rebounds, and four assists.

-After a back and forth first quarter, Monmouth rattled off a 6-0 run to end the frame, taking a 20-15 lead.

-Manhattan used multiple runs in the second quarter, including a 15-2 outburst to take a 40-35 lead into halftime. Kayla Shaw went into double-figures for the 15th time this season in the first half, scoring 10 points on two triples. Kayla Grimme had 13 points at the half for the Jaspers.

-Manhattan led by as many as 12 in the third quarter, but Erica Balman’s layup at the third quarter buzzer cut it to single-digits at 61-52.

-The Jaspers ran away with it in the fourth quarter, holding Monmouth to just two points in the first 7:03 of the fourth quarter. Manhattan built its largest lead of 19 with 5:06 left in the fourth quarter, eventually securing the 14-point win.



-Monmouth took the 20-15 lead after the first quarter, but were outscored 60-41 the rest of the way.

-Alaina Jarnot scored seven points to go alone with three rebounds and three assists in the first quarter alone. Jarnot totaled five assists on the night, and continues to lead the team in that category with 82.

-Sophomore center Erica Balman went 3-5 from the floor, totaling seven points and six rebounds in the loss.

-The Hawks shot just 21.7% from long range, making just five of 23 attempts.

-Freshman Adriana Zelaya scored her first points since January 15, drilling her fifth three-pointer of the year in the fourth quarter.

-Manhattan’s leading scorer Kayla Grimme went 11-15 from the field and scored 25 points.



Monmouth will have a quick turnaround as it travels to Marist on Saturday. Tip from Poughkeepsie, NY is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Earlier this season, the Hawks bested the Red Foxes in West Long Branch, 79-69.
