Monmouth (0-1) - 1

Lipscomb (3-3) - 4

Monmouth (0-2) - 2

Illinois at Chicago (6-0) – 7

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC – In its first games since a MAAC Championship appearance a season ago, Monmouth Softball opened the 2017 campaign with two losses at the Wyndham Garden Cougar Classic in Mount Pleasant, SC on Friday. The Hawks dropped game one to Lipscomb, 4-1, before also falling to Illinois at Chicago, 7-2. The Hawks will look for their first win tomorrow, with games against Winthrop and hosting College of Charleston.

“Obviously these were not the final results we had hoped to have. Amanda threw a nice game against Lipscomb. We put the ball in play but needed to find a way to push more runs across. Against UIC, we got off to a slow start and did not regroup until it was too late against a solid team. Overall, we know we left outs and swings on the field and we plan to adjust that for tomorrow. “  – Monmouth head coach Shannon Salsburg

-In the first game against Lipscomb, Reyes doubled to left center to bring home Rachel Shotzbarger to give Monmouth the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

-Amanda Riley held Lipscomb scoreless until the top of the fifth inning, as the Bisons eventually plated four in the inning.

-Down 4-1 heading into the bottom half of the seventh, Reyes’ single and Nicole Wieczorek’s double gave the Hawks runners on second and third with two outs, but Lipscomb’s McCarley Thomas struck out her seventh batter to end the game.

-In the second contest against Illinois at Chicago, Monmouth gave up three runs in the top of the second, two runs in the top of the fourth, and one run each in the sixth and seventh innings. Freshman Megan Stauffer made her pitching debut, going 3.1 innings while giving up two earned runs.

- The lone Monmouth runs against UIC came from a two-out, two RBI double from sophomore Nicole Wieczorek which scored Reyes and Shotzbarger.

-Preseason All-MAAC senior Justene Reyes had four hits in five plate appearances on the day, including the RBI double against Lipscomb.

-Fellow All-MAAC selection Amanda Riley recorded 11 strikeouts in the loss at Lipscomb during a complete game.

-Morgan Balderas notched her first hit as a Hawk, getting the leadoff single against Lipscomb.

-Senior Sydney Underhill pitched 3.2 innings against UIC, totaling 99 pitches. She gave up seven hits and four earned runs to fall to 0-1 on the season. Underhill also threw three strikeouts.

-Chloe Howerth, Alex Holzman, and Katie Baron also registered hits against Illinois at Chicago. However, the Flames outhit Monmouth, 12-5.

Monmouth will play two more games tomorrow, with the first coming against Winthrop at 11:00 AM. The Hawks will face the College of Charleston shortly after at 1:30 PM, with a live stream available.
