WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PREVIEW: HAWKS LOOK FOR SEASON SWEEP OF MARIST SATURDAY

Monmouth Hawks (12-13, 7-9 MAAC) at Marist Red Foxes (12-15, 9-8 MAAC)

Facing the highest shooting percentage from an opponent this season, Monmouth was defeated by Manhattan on Thursday night, 75-61. The Jaspers went 30-51 (58.8%) from the field and 8-15 (53.3%) from long range, as the Hawks dropped to 12-13 (7-9 MAAC) on the season. The two teams totaled 53 turnovers on the night and both registered 31 rebounds. Sophomore guard McKinzee Barker scored in double-figures for the second consecutive game and sixth time this season, while freshman Kayla Shaw hit two more three-pointers, totaling 10 points. Shaw now has 74 total threes this season, and needs just six more to tie the single-season program record with four games remaining. Monmouth will travel to Poughkeepsie, NY today for a 5:00 PM matchup with Marist.

 

SCOUTING THE MARIST RED FOXES

Marist sits two sports ahead of Monmouth in the MAAC standings at 9-8. The Red Foxes snapped a three-game losing skid on Thursday as they bested Fairfield, 68-62, led by Maura Fitzpatrick’s 22 points. Freshman Rebekah Hand added 14 points and seven rebounds in the win and currently leads the team with 13.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per contest. Marist features five players averaging in double-figures, including Allie Clement who has played just three games. Hand, Clement, and Fitzpatrick are joined by Claire Oberdorf and Hannah Hand in double-figure scoring average. 

 

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. MARIST

Monmouth and Marist will meet for the 40th time on Saturday, with the Hawks holding the slight advantage at 20-19. In the first game between the teams this season, Monmouth outscored Marist 25-12 in the second quarter and was paced by four players in double-figures. The Hawks earned the 79-69 win in West Long Branch. Sophomore McKinzee Barker scored a career-high 16 points in the win, shooting 6-9 from the floor (3-4 3FG). Freshman Alaina Jarnot notched then-career-highs in both points (14) and assists (7) on the afternoon.
