SOFTBALL EDGED BY WINTHROP, SHUTOUT BY COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC – Despite giving up just four hits, the Monmouth University softball team fell to Winthrop, 4-2, before dropping game two to host College of Charleston, 4-0, in the second day of the Wyndham Garden Cougar Classic. Junior Amanda Riley pitched 5.2 innings while giving up the four hits against Winthrop and the Hawks added RBI from Rachel Shotzbarger and Amanda Riley. Five different Hawks registered hits against College of Charleston in the following game, but Monmouth could not capitalize, ultimately facing the 4-0 loss. The team will play one more game in South Carolina, as the Hawks will take on Eastern Kentucky tomorrow morning at 9:30 AM.

 

NOTES AND QUOTES

“We played better today. Our bats were solid, but we couldn’t seem to find a clutch hit to really get us rolling. We need to sure up our defense and continue to be aggressive in the circle. We are trending in the right direction and look forward to playing tomorrow.” – Monmouth head coach Shannon Salsburg

-Monmouth took the early lead in the top of the first from a Shotzbarger RBI single against Winthrop, scoring Nicole Wieczorek.

-Riley brought home Morgan Balderas on a ground out in the top of the second inning, giving Monmouth the 2-1 lead.

-The Hawks held the 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, but Winthrop’s two-run home run and RBI triple sealed the 4-2 win.

-Against College of Charleston, Monmouth received five singles from Wieczorek, Shotzbarger, Alex Holzman, Brooke Redmond, and Katie Baron. The Hawks went down in order in the sixth and seventh innings, and left five on base throughout the contest.

 

NUMBERS CRUNCH

-The Hawks have given up exactly four runs in three out of the four games this season.

-Sydney Underhill pitched 4.2 innings against the Cougars, giving up eight hits and four earned runs on 91 total pitches. Underhill stuck out two in the loss.  

-Riley has pitched 12.2 total innings, and leads the team with 17 strikeouts.

-Through four games, Justene Reyes leads the team with a batting average of .364. Alex Holzman is behind her, batting .300 in 10 at bats.

-Wieczorek leads the team this season in doubles (2) and RBI (2).

 

UP NEXT

The team will wrap up play at the Wyndham Garden Cougar Classic on Sunday as they face Eastern Kentucky on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 9:30 AM.
