MONMOUTH DOMINATES NIAGARA 84-59 TO ADVANCE TO MAAC SEMIFINALS

ALBANY, NY- Monmouth put four in double figures and shot over 47% from the field in beating Niagara in the MAAC quarterfinals Friday evening, 84-59 at the Times Union Center. Louie Pillari (Tinton Falls, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) netted a career-high 16 points and led all scorers in the victory.

The Hawks second-half lead was never less than 15, and MU responded with seven of the next nine points after Niagara cut it to 55-40, capped by Justin Robinson’s Robinson (Lake Katrine, NY/Kingston)  three-point play into the under-12 media timeout. The lead grew to as many as 27 in the latter stages and MU finished with a 25-point win.

A back-and forth early first half saw the game tied at 24 before MU took over, finishing the period on a 23-6 run to take a 17-point lead at the break. Pillari hit a three, and Robinson followed with another 30 seconds later. Pillari would score 14 points in the final 5:58 of the half and send MU to the locker room leading 47-30.

-Monmouth advances to the MAAC semifinals for the third consecutive season.
-MU has won 17 in a row, the second most in the nation behind Vermont’s 19.
-Louie Pillari set a career-high in the first half, scoring 14 points on 3-3 from the floor in just seven minutes and finished with 16 points.
-Chris Brady was 5-6 in the opening half, scoring 11 points on three dunks. Brady finished with 13 points on 6-7 shooting.
-Je’lon Hornbeak drove through the right side of the lane and scored his 1,000th career point at 18:06 of the first half.
-Justin Robinson tied Mustafa Barksdale for second all-time in steals in the first half with 209.


NUMBERS CRUNCH
-The Hawks outshot Niagara 47.5% to 28.6% for the game.

-Monmouth outshot Niagara in the first half 57.7% to 28.9%.
-The Hawks had 15 assists on 28 baskets.
-MU allowed Niagara to shoot just 14.3% from beyond the arc.
-Monmouth outran the Purple Eagles on the fast break 20-2.
-Monmouth’s bench outscored Niagara’s 42-24.
