MONMOUTH BASEBALL HELD OFF BY WILLIAM AND MARY FRIDAY, 6-5

CARY, NC- Monmouth baseball got a four-hit game from Shaine Hughes (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) and a strong outing from Ricky Dennis (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks South) but could not get over the hump against William and Mary Friday afternoon in the first game of the Irish Classic.

Monmouth jumped out to an early third inning lead but the Tribe scored three unanswered, two from Kyle Wrighte’s fourth inning home run. MU trailed by as many as three but battled back to cut it to one two separate times, including once in the seventh on a Hughes double and again in the eighth on Aidan Favia’s (Short Hills, NJ/Millburn) sacrifice fly.

Dennis did not allow an earned run in six innings, while Hughes led the offensive attack with four hits and two RBI’s. MU loaded the bases in the last of the ninth but could not score.

NOTES AND QUOTES

-Monmouth drops it’s first one-run game of the season.
-Tommy Jakubowski scored twice and walked three times for MU offensively.
-JP Walsh picked up his first collegiate hit and RBI with a run-scoring double in the seventh.
-Monmouth loaded the bases in the ninth inning but could not score.
-Jakubowski stole consecutive bases in the eighth before scoring on Favia’s sacrifice fly.

NUMBERS CRUNCH

-The Hawks were outhit 11-8.
-MU scored in four of the final seven innings.
-Hughes’ four hits are a single game season high for Monmouth.
-Dennis did not allow an earned run in his six innings, striking out three.

-Monmouth continues play in the tournament tomorrow against the University of Rhode Island in Cary, NC.
