SPARTANBURG, SC- Monmouth got strong pitching and a four-run ninth inning to beat Wofford in the second game of a split doubleheader in Spartanburg, SC Saturday, 6-4. MU was defeated in the early game by USC Upstate, 14-5.
Tied at two entering the ninth, a trio of freshmen reached base before Ryan Crowley (Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY/Iona Preparatory) lifted a fly ball to left that was dropped, enabling newcomer Zach Schild (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) to score the lead run. Later in the inning, Tom Jakubowski (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford/Long Island) launched a three-run home run to put the Hawks up 6-2. Wofford got a pair back in the bottom of the inning but Joe Molettiere (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) secured the win by striking out Alex Malsch.
Wofford got single runs in the fifth and sixth to tie the game, including a Brett Hash solo home run in the sixth. MU held a 2-0 lead in the third after Shaine Hughes (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) blasted his second home run of the season. Tyler Ksiazek (South Abington Township, PA/Abington Heights) was solid on the mound, allowing just two runs on three hits in 5.2 innings.
In the early game, Monmouth jumped out to a 3-0 lead after John LaRocca (Plainview, NY/St. Dominic) manufactured a run and Aidan Favia (Short Hills, NJ/Millburn) hit a two-run double to stake the Hawks to the early advantage. However, USC Upstate responded with four in the bottom of the inning and did not look back, also scoring four in the third and the seventh. MU cut it to 9-5 with a two-run fifth but got no closer.
NOTES AND QUOTES “It is nice to get back that W that has been somewhat elusive. Ksiazek and Molettiere pitched excellent. Joe definitely gave us a lift with some late inning energy. Zach Schild was a huge contributor both on offense and defense. Of course, Tommy had the big blow which was nice to see. I hope that gets him jumpstarted.” –head coach Dean Ehehalt
