FIELD HOCKEY EARNS NFHCA ACADEMIC HONORS
WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – The Monmouth University field hockey team was represented by 10 student-athletes on the 2016 ZAG Field Hockey/National Field Hockey Coach Association (NFHCA) Division I National Academic Squad as the team earned its eighth-straight NFHCA National Academic Team Award, the organization announced this week.
Senior Casey Hanna (Seaville, NJ/Ocean City) earned her fourth academic honor of her career, while the Hawks’ total climbs to 104 honorees during head coach Carli Figlio’s 10 years at the helm of the program. Joining Hanna on the academic team is Stef Bigler (North Vancouver, BC/Seycove Secondary School), Annie Deusch (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional), Meg Donahue (Wyomissing, PA/Berks Catholic), Alyssa Ercolino (West Long Branch, NJ/Shore Regional), Gab Girardi (Roseland, NJ/West Essex), Kelly Hanna (Seaville, NJ/Ocean City [Rutgers]), Rachel Konowal (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh), Mallory Kusakavitch (Pittston, PA / Holy Redeemer) and Elyssa Okken (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley).
The National Academic Squad recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2016-17 academic year.
The field hockey program, which compiled a GPA of 3.27 in the fall, also earned the team accolade for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons. To be eligible, the team much achieve a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the fall semester.
The Hawks finished the 2017 campaign with a 17-3 record and capped off their most successful season to date with the MAAC Regular Season and Tournament Championship, while making their second appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
