WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ- Monmouth Baseball was defeated in a pair of games to Marist Saturday, falling 5-4 in the opener before a 7-1 loss in the second contest. Tom Jakubowski (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford/Long Island) was the only Hawk with multiple hits in each game.

The Hawks comeback effort fell just short in the opener, when MU entered the ninth down 5-0 but scored four times to trim the deficit to a single run. John LaRocca (Plainview, NY/St. Dominic) led off with a pinch-hit double, and Shaine Hughes (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) drove him in before Pete Papcun (Brick, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) lined a single the other way to make it a 5-2 game. Clay Koniencki (Schwenksville, PA/Malvern Prep) dropped a base hit into right to score two more and set up runners on the corners with two away, but Mike Coss struck out Ryan Crowley (Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY/Iona Preparatory) to end the game.

Marist got the lead on a three-run home run in the first inning by Greg Kocinski, and added to it with single runs in the third and fifth on a sacrifice fly and a passed ball. Red Foxes starter Charlie Jerla worked into the final inning, striking out seven.

In the nightcap, Marist jumped to a 5-0 lead in the third inning on a two-run single from Kocinski and a three-run home run from Tyler Kirkpatrick. MU got a run back in the fifth when Dan Shea (Wilmington, DE/Salesianum) hit a sacrifice fly to right to cut the deficit to 5-1, but Marist got it right back in the sixth with a sac fly of their own. The Red Foxes added a run in the ninth to secure the 7-1 win.
