WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Monmouth Baseball scored 10 runs in the first inning en route to an 11-5 victory in the first game of a three-game set over Iona Thursday afternoon. MU batted around in the opening frame and got a strong pitching performance from Kyle Ajjan (Chester Springs, PA/Downingtown East) to pick up a MAAC victory, keeping themselves alive for a berth in the 2017 MAAC Tournament.

Tom Jakubowski (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford/Long Island) got the scoring started with a two-run single in the first, and Dan Abate (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) was later hit by a pitch with the bases full to make it 3-0. Infield singles from a pair of freshmen, Danny Long (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) and Zach Schild (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) made it 6-0 after a second run scored on an error before a ground out plated a seventh run.

The final three runs of the inning came home on hard-hit balls, the first from Shaine Hughes (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) on a single the other way. Pete Papcun (Brick, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) singled to deep left center, and Jakubowski finished it off with a double the other way, capping the 10-run inning.

Iona didn't get on the board until the fourth on a fielder's choice as Ajjan worked six strong innings, surrendering just the one run and striking out five. Iona scored four times in the final two innings, the bulk on a three-run double from Stephen Furman, to cap the scoring at 11-5.

NOTES AND QUOTES

“Kyle gave us a boost. We needed somebody to go out there and go a little deeper in the game than what we've been getting and he certainly did that. He made some good pitches and he set the tone in the first putting up a zero.” – Head Coach Dean Ehehalt on Kyle Ajjan's outing

“It was the same thing we've been able to do all year with big innings. We have good at bats, we take a walk when we get it, and we were able to take advantage of getting an additional out. Dan Abate had a great base running play that really ignited us a little bit.” – Ehehalt on the 10-run first inning
