MENíS AND WOMENíS CROSS COUNTRY RANKED FOURTH IN MAAC PRESEASON POLL
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Monmouth University men’s and women’s cross country teams were both selected fourth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) preseason polls, league officials announced Tuesday. The women’s team earns the fourth place spot with 84 points after finishing in that place during the 2013 MAAC Championships. The men placed fifth last year, and garnered a fourth place ranking with 85 votes.
“We are very excited about the upcoming cross country season,” said Head Coach Joe Compagni. “With the veterans we have returning, we should absolutely be stronger than last year, during the regular season and at our championship meets.”
The men return Khari Bowen (Monroe, N.J./Monroe Township), who earned multiple honors last season including All-MAAC, All-East and All-Region. Alex Leight (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) also earned All-East honors for MU a year ago, and he returns for his senior season. On the women’s side, rising sophomore Lennon Cooper (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) earned All-MAAC honors last season and looks to lead a group that graduated senior Amanda Eller last year.
In 2013, the men’s cross country squad ranked in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Top-15 from September 23 through the end of the season, with the women finding their way inside the top-15 during the year also. The men ranked 15th at the NCAA Regionals in November, the second highest finish in program history, and also claimed second at IC4A’s, good for the best finish in school history. The women’s side took fifth at ECAC’s, the third best mark in the history of the program.
Monmouth opens the 2014 campaign on August 30 with the Monmouth XC Kick-Off at Thompson Park in Lincroft, N.J. at 9:00 a.m. The Hawks will also host the 2014 MAAC Championships at Holmdel Park in Holmdel, N.J. on October 31.
