MONMOUTH SOFTBALL OVERPOWERED BY MISSOURI IN FIVE INNINGS, 10-1

CLEARWATER, FL – Scoring seven combined runs in the first and second inning, Missouri defeated the Monmouth University softball team in five innings on Sunday morning, 10-1. Senior Rachel Shotzbarger brought home Monmouth’s only run, hitting an RBI single in the second inning that scored Alex Holzman. The Hawks’ trip to Florida comes to an end after playing 13 games in 10 days, including eight games in the last five days. Monmouth fell to 6-14 on the season, and will travel to Stony Brook for a double-header on Wednesday.

 

 

NOTES AND QUOTES

-Mizzou built an early 3-0 lead in the first inning from an RBI double and 2-RBI double.

-The Hawks got a run back in the top of the second inning, as Holzman reached on an error to begin the inning. After moving over to second on a groundout, she scored on Shotzbarger’s single to left field.

-The Tigers tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the second to take the 7-1 lead. The team loaded the bases with no outs, and scored the first run on a sacrifice fly. Missouri added the other runs from an RBI single, RBI groundout, and passed ball.

-After no runs were scored in the third inning, Missouri scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 10-1.

-Nicole Wieczorek led off the top of the fifth with a walk, but Monmouth could not register any runs to fall in five innings.

 

NUMBERS CRUNCH

-Missouri’s 10 runs came on eight hits. Monmouth tallied three hits in the loss.

-Amanda Riley took the loss in the contest, throwing 1.1 innings while giving up five hits and five earned runs.

-Since Wednesday, Justene Reyes is batting .440 (11-for-25) with two home runs and nine RBI.

-Shotzbarger has registered eight RBI in the last eight games.

 

 

UP NEXT

The Hawks will take on Stony Brook this Wednesday in a double-header. Game one is scheduled for 2:00 PM. Monmouth’s first home game will come on March 29, as the Hawks welcome Saint Joseph’s at 3:30 PM.
