KRALINGEN, ROTTERDAM – After nearly 15 hours of travel, the Monmouth University field hockey team opened its foreign tour Wednesday night, falling 2-1 to Victoria Field Hockey Club in The Netherlands. The Hawks left West Long Branch at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, landed Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. and took the field at 8:45 p.m. local time. The 2016 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Regular Season and Tournament champions competed with the second division champions to the fourth quarter before surrendering the deciding goal.

The two sides played four 17-minute quarters with the home squad scoring in the opening frame to go up one. The Hawks responded in the second stanza as MAAC All-Championships Team selection Kelly Hanna sent a strong cross that connected with a diving Georgia Garden Bachop to even the score at 1-1 before the break. After a scoreless third, Victoria scored the game-winner in the final quarter to secure the victory.

Victoria is the former club team of rising senior Julie Laszlo, who faced her former teammates for the first time.

“It was amazing experience to play my old club,” said the 2016 MAAC Player of the Year. “It is incredible to have this experience with Monmouth teammates in my homeland.”

During its 10-day excursion, Monmouth will tour Rotterdam, Kinderdjik Windmills, Hague, Scheveningen, and Amsterdam, while visiting Anne Frank's House and taking in a Premier Field Hockey League playoff match. When in Italy, the Hawks will explore Vatican City, with stops inside the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Square, and all of Rome's best sites.

The Hawks will take the field again on Thursday for another exhibition.
