Abraham Flores, a USATF Level 2 certified throws coach, is in his 15th year as an assistant track & field coach at Monmouth University. Flores tutors the Hawks' throwers and is heavily involved in MU's recruiting efforts. Flores has mentored some of the best throwers in Hawks' history having coached his athletes to All-American honors on six occasions. In 2015, Coach Flores served as the men’s throws coach for Team USA at the 2015 Pan-American Junior Championships in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Coach Flores’ Team USA Throwers collected Gold Medals in three of the four men’s events at the Pan Am Juniors, along with one Silver and one Bronze.
During his tenure in West Long Branch, Flores has had a tremendous impact on the throws program. Most of the athletes on the Monmouth top 10 lists have been coached by Flores as well as the school record holders in the women’s shot put (indoor: Rachel Aliotta 48’11.5” & outdoor: Rachel Aliotta 49’1.5”), men’s weight throw (Errol Jeffrey 65’6.25”); women’s weight throw (Tilah Young 59’9.5”), men’s discus (Taylor Bernstein 179’10”), women’s hammer (Symmone Fisher 188’1”), women’s discus (Taylor Johnson 170’9”), women’s javelin (Kelsey Reese 164’4”) and men’s javelin (Bobby Smith 240’8”). Flores coached Bobby Smith to a ’08 U.S. Olympic Trials Javelin title, and has had 6 USA Track and Field Championships qualifiers, 12 U.S. Junior National Championships qualifiers, 6 NCAA DI All-Americans, 3 USATF Jr. All-Americans, 24 USTFCCCA Academic All-Americans, 10 NCAA National Championship qualifiers, 5 NCAA All-East Region honorees and 72 NCAA East 1st Round qualifiers. He has also tutored 8 IC4A Champions, 1 ECAC Champion, 71 All-East athletes at the IC4A/ECAC Championships, numerous IC4A/ECAC qualifiers, 20 Metro Atlantic Conference Champions and 43 Northeast Conference Champions.
In the 2015-16 season, the Hawks had five throwers qualify for the NCAA 1st Rd in Jacksonville, FL. Monmouth was represented by Tevin Kirby-Stewart (Men’s Shot Put: 18.56m/60’10.75”PB), Corey Murphy (Men’s Shot Put: 18.08m/59’4”PB), Tim Wilson (Men’s Hammer: 62.32m/204’5”PB), Faith Blamon (Women’s Javelin: 45.00m/147’7”SB) and Stephanie Roones (Women’s Javelin: 45.28m/148/6”SB). The Hawks also had two throwers earn USTFCCCA Academic All American status (Corey Murphy and Stephanie Roones). At the IC4A/ECAC Championships, Corey Murphy was crowned the IC4A Champion in the Shot Put and several Hawk Throwers earned ALL EAST honors (Tevin Kirby-Stewart – Men’s Shot Put and Discus, Tim Wilson – Men’s Hammer, Troy Andretta – Men’s Hammer 61.03m/200’3”PB, Faith Blamon – Women’s Javelin, Stephanie Roones – Women’s Javelin and Alicia Hester – Women’s Hammer). The MAAC Indoor & Outdoor Championships saw several Hawks earn All Conference status as well as 4 conference champions (Outdoor: Tevin Kirby-Stewart – Men’s Shot Put Champion & Discus Champion and Faith Blamon – Women’s Javelin Champion. Indoor: Corey Murphy – Men’s Shot Put Champion).
In 2014-15, Coach Flores had 5 NCAA 1st Rd qualifiers, 3 Academic All Americans (Taylor Bernstein, Taylor Johnson and Kelsey Reese), 2 ECAC Champions (Taylor Johnson - Discus, Kelsey Reese-Javelin), 2 school records broken (Taylor Bernstein men’s Discus 179’10”, Taylor Johnson women’s Discus 170’9”), 2 freshman athletes qualify for USA Junior Nationals (Corey Murphy Shot Put & Stephanie Roones Javelin) and 1 USA Jr All American (Stephanie Roones - Javelin).
The 2013-14 season was a banner season for the Monmouth University Throws squad. It was highlighted by two nationally ranked men’s javelin throwers. Senior, Vince DuVernois and Sophomore, McLean Lipschutz earned All-American honors at the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the University of Oregon. The men’s throws group ended the season as the No.1 ranked throws group in the country (According to The Throwers Page/ Tony Dziepiak).
In the 2012-13, Flores coached Errol Jeffrey to All-America honors in the shot put, with Faith Blamon (Javelin) and McLean Lipschutz (Javelin) earning Junior All-American honors at the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Errol Jeffrey (35# Weight, Discus & Shot Put), Symmone Fisher (Hammer), Taylor Johnson (Discus) and Kelsey Reese (Javelin) each won NEC titles.
In 2008, Flores was nominated and selected by the United States Olympic Committee and USA Track & Field to participate in the "Emerging Elite Coaches Program" at the US Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA. The Emerging Elite Coaching Camp, a joint venture of USA Track & Field and the United States Olympic Committee, brings together some of the top track and field coaches in the U.S. with the goal of developing elite athletes to medal potential in the Olympic Games and World Championships.
Outside of Monmouth, Flores mentored Monmouth University Track & Field alums, Jon Kalnas (Shot Put) and Bobby Smith (Javelin) to multiple USA Outdoor Track & Field Championship appearances as well as the 2008 US Olympic Trials. He is currently coaching USA shot putters Monique Riddick and Nick Vena. Monique hit a personal best of 17.73m/58’2” in the shot put last season, and that mark qualified her for the 2016 US Olympic Trials where she finished in 13thplace, just 1 spot out of the finals.
Flores arrived in West Long Branch from Whittier, Calif., where he was serving as an assistant coach at both Whittier College and Rio Hondo Junior College. He coached Whittier from 2000-2002 and mentored All-Americans in the javelin, as well as several all-conference performers and NCAA qualifiers in the throws. He coached simultaneously at Rio Hondo in 2001 and 2002, guiding a California state finalist in the decathlon and a conference champion in the javelin. He also coached school record performers in the hammer throw, javelin and decathlon.
Abraham was a member of the track & field team at the University of Southern California. He was tutored in the throws by nationally recognized throws coach, Dan Lange. While at USC, Flores trained with Balazs Kiss, who was a four-time NCAA National Champion in the hammer and gold medalist at the 1996 Olympic Games. After college, Flores continued to compete in the throws for two years. He was the President and member of "The Bomb Squad", a throwing club that was based out of Southern California. Flores earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from USC in 1996. He added a Master of Education degree from Whittier in 2002. He is the owner of Igloo Ice, Inc., a dry ice distribution company based out of Hollywood, CA. Flores currently resides in Monmouth Beach.
