ARLINGTON, VA- Monmouth baseball got a pair of home runs and strong pitching from three different players as they topped George Washington in the series opener at Barcroft Park, 3-1 Friday afternoon. MU has now won two of three for the first time this season.

The Hawks got on the board with Dan Shea (Wilmington, DE/Salesianum)’s third home run of the season, and added to the lead when the first three Hawks reached with singles ahead of a Tom Jakubowski (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) sacrifice fly. MU took a 3-0 lead on Shaine Hughes’ (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) third long ball of 2017 in the sixth.

McCrum set down the Colonials in order from the last out of the third through the sixth, retiring 11 in a row before GW broke through in the seventh. A hit by pitch, a walk and a wild pitch allowed Cody Bryant to single home the first George Washington run, but Joe Molettiere (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) relieved McCrum and immediately induced a double play to end the inning.

Justin Andrews (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) fired a hitless ninth inning to earn his third save of the year, as the Hawks won their second in the last three games.
