Fairfield Stags 5-8 (2-2 MAAC) - 71

Monmouth Hawks 6-7 (1-3 MAAC) - 68


WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Monmouth University’s women’s basketball team built a 22-8 lead after the first quarter and led by as many as 18, but a 63-46 Fairfield advantage during the last three quarters gave the Stags the win on Wednesday night, 71-68. Kelsey Carey led the Stags with 20 points, and two Fairfield players registered double-doubles in the win, including Casey Smith with 17 points and 11 rebounds and Samantha Cooper with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Kayla Shaw led Monmouth with 17 points on five three-pointers, and now has 38 triples in 13 games.  The Hawks will have another quick turnaround and host their third straight conference game on Saturday, when they welcome St. Peter’s at 2:00 PM.

You don’t have time to celebrate victories or dwell on losses very long. -Monmouth led 22-8 after the first quarter and led by as many as 18 with 7:22 left in the second quarter.


-The Hawks shot 9-16 from three point land in the first half, building a 37-29 lead at the break.


-Freshman forward Adriana Zelaya made her collegiate debut, playing four minutes and narrowly missing her first three-point attempt.


-Fairfield secured its first lead with 9:01 left in the fourth quarter, as Samantha Cooper hit a three.


-Monmouth regained its lead with 4:10 remaining, as Kayla Shaw netted her fifth triple of the night on Purvis’ fifth assist which became a new career-high.


-After a Kristine Miller jumper gave the Stags a one-point lead with 1:26 left, Christina Mitchell knocked down two free throws to put Monmouth back on top 67-66 with 45 seconds to go.


-With 11.0 seconds left and the Hawks up two, Fairfield headed to the line for three foul shots. Kelsey Carey drained all three, giving Fairfield the 69-68 advantage.


-The Hawks got two looks late, but missed a layup and three to eventually fall 71-68.



-Shaw’s 17 points put her in double-figures for the eighth time this year, which is now tied for the team lead with Purvis.


-Purvis dished out a career-high six assists in the loss. Her previous high was four which she registered twice.  The senior also scored six points and added three rebounds.


-Rosa Graham scored 11 points in her fourth double-figures game of the season, shooting 4-5 from the line in 21 minutes.


-Freshman Alaina Jarnot added nine points and five assists, and now has 23 points with 12 assists in the last two games.


-Coming into Wednesday, Taylor Nason led the team with 7.4 rebounds per game and led Monmouth once again with nine rebounds.


-Monmouth’s bench outscored the opponent’s bench for the 12th time in 13 games, this time with the 38-17 advantage over Fairfield.



The Hawks will host their third MAAC game in six days when they welcome the St. Peter’s Peacocks to the OceanFirst Bank Center on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 PM on ESPN3.
