KAYLA SHAW NAMED TO MAAC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ALL-ROOKIE TEAM
EDISON, NJ – Monmouth freshman guard Kayla Shaw (Scottsdale, AZ/Chaparral) has been selected to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Rookie team, the conference announced today. Shaw leads the MAAC in three-point field goals made (88), three-point field goals per game (3.0), and three-point field goal percentage (41.4%). Her 88 made triples set a Monmouth single-season program record, burying eight more than the previous record holder Beth DiRenzo (1990-91). Just 29 games into her collegiate career, the freshman ranks 12th in program history in career three-pointers made.
“We are very happy for Kayla,” said Monmouth head coach Jenny Palmateer. “When she came to MU, her only expectation was to work as hard as she could to help our team any way she could. She has certainly done that and in the process has had a great year.”
A three-time MAAC Rookie of the Week, Shaw led Monmouth in scoring during the regular season with 336 points and an 11.6-point scoring average. She registered double-figures in 18 games this year, and had a team-high in points during 11 games. Shaw played in all 29 games this season with 19 starts, including starting each of the last 16 contests. Her 88 triples and 3.0 three-pointers made per game both rank top-20 nationally, while her 41.4% three-point percentage ranks sixth in Monmouth history for a single-season.
The Scottsdale, AZ native made at least one three-pointer in 27 out of 29 games this season, including burying seven in the double overtime loss to Siena in January, which ranks tied for second in program history for threes made in a game. Shaw made at least five three-pointers in seven games this season, including a stretch of three straight games. She scored at least 20 points in three games, including her career-high of 24 against Siena. The freshman also led the team with 24.7 minutes per game.
“We are very proud of Kayla’s accomplishments this season and have full faith that even greater things are in store,” Palmateer added.
One of these five freshmen will be honored as the 2016-17 MAAC Rookie of the Year at the Postseason Awards Show, which is going to be held at the brand-new Albany Capital Center on Friday, March 3 at 10:00 a.m. The Postseason Awards Show airs live on ESPN3.
Shaw and the seventh-seeded Hawks will travel to Albany, NY for the MAAC Championships this Thursday, as they take on tenth-seeded Manhattan Jaspers at 11:30 AM.
