MIKE BASILE NAMED SECOND TEAM AP ALL-AMERICAN
WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Monmouth University junior safety Mike Basile (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) has been named as a Second Team All-American selection by the Associated Press.
Basile becomes the first Hawk to earn second team honors by the AP.
The Brick, NJ native wrapped up his junior campaign with his third straight First Team All-Big South selection after finishing second in the league with 110 tackles. He had five games of 10+ tackles, including 16 against FBS foe Kent State. Basile led the conference in forced fumbles and blocked kicks with three. Heading into his final year Basile ranks third all-time in tackles at Monmouth with 307.
He was a finalist for the STATS Buck Buchanan Award, given to the nation’s top FCS’ top defensive player. Earlier this month he became the first Monmouth player since Sinisi and Jose Gumbs (2008) to earn First Team All-ECAC honors.
Monmouth Athletics Hall of Fame member Joe Sentipal became the first Hawk to earn AP All-American honors, making his way onto the third team in 2002. In 2008 former Hawks David Sinisi and Kevin Walsh were also earned Third Team All-American honors by the AP.
