APALACHIN, NY – The Monmouth University men’s golf team cracked 300 for the first time with its opening round 298 as it finished Binghamton’s Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational with 605, Monday afternoon.

In his second event of his career, freshman Andy Stock (Danbury, CT/Danbury) paced the Blue and White, firing an even 72 in Sunday’s opening round en route to finishing the 36-hole event with 148. Kyle Burke (West Sayville, NY/Sayville [Sacred Heart]) carded rounds of 73 and 77 to finish the tournament with 150, five strokes in front of Tommy Whelan (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) who took three shots off his first round score with his second round 76. Drake Ferriter (Ramsey, NJ/Bergen Catholic) completed the event one stroke behind Whelan after back-to-back rounds of 78, while Jesse Hazam (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) and Chase Makowski (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer), who played as an individual, both notched 157 over the two days.

“For the two-day tournament, the golf course was very, very soft and conditions were playable and set up for low scores, something that we did take advantage of. We had a lot of mental mistakes, missed fairways and we missed a lot of putts that should have been made. Those three areas are something that we can’t afford to have happen, so we have some work to do as we continue to get better as a group. ” – Head Coach Dennis Shea

- Monmouth finished 12 shots better than it did at the event in 2015.
- All six Hawks shot in the 70s in the first round of competition.
- Stock, who led the Hawks’ card for the first time, recorded his first career par or better round with his opening round 72.
