WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ- Monmouth University freshman Nicole Ceraso (Massapequa, NY/Plainedge) has been named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, league officials announced on Monday afternoon.

Ceraso was impressive in her first collegiate game, leading all scorers in goals with four and points with eight. It took the Massapequa, NY native 2:09 into her first collegiate start to score, putting the Hawks up 1-0 with an unassisted goal. Just over two minutes later she recorded her first career assist, feeding junior Alexa Smith on a marker that put the Hawks up 2-0. After MU fell behind 9-3 with seven minutes to go in the first half, Ceraso assisted on a pair of goals and scored her second to cut the MU deficit to three going into the break. She scored two more goals during Monmouth’s run of six unanswered goals in the second half that tied up the game 12-12. The freshman attacker was 2-of-3 on free position attempts and committed just one turnover.

Monmouth would take a late lead only to have GWU tie it up with 26 seconds remaining. After Monmouth won the ensuing draw, senior Olivia Higson beat the Colonial goaltender to win give MU its first season-opening win since 2015.

Ceraso and the Hawks will face Temple on Wednesday afternoon.
