MOUNT PLEASANT, SC – Amanda Riley threw a complete game without giving up an earned run as the Monmouth University softball team earned its first win of the season over Eastern Kentucky in eight innings, 2-1. Riley completed all eight innings while throwing 11 strikeouts on the morning, earning her first win of the season. The game was tied at zero headed into the seventh inning, as Nicole Wieczorek gave the Hawks the 1-0 lead after scoring on a passed ball. Eastern Kentucky answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Justene Reyes’ sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth that scored Chloe Howerth put Monmouth back on top, 2-1. In the bottom of the eighth, Riley struck out her 11th batter to end the game, and the Hawks improved to 1-4 on the season. The team will have 12 days off before it travels to Washington, DC for the George Washington Colonial Classic.

-Chloe Howerth doubled down the left field line in the top of the first inning, but she was stranded at third as the Hawks struck out to end the frame.

-In the top of the fourth, freshman Kayla Rosado hit her first career triple to lead-off the inning, but the Hawks fell victim to a double play to keep it scoreless.

-Monmouth also threatened in the top of the sixth, as Reyes was hit by a pitch. She advanced to second on a Holzman groundout and stole third, but Rosado flied out to end the inning.

-With two outs in the top of the seventh, Wieczorek doubled down the left field line on a 2-2 count. After stealing third base, she scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball.  

-Eastern Kentucky’s seventh inning run came on a throwing error with two outs and a runner on third

-In the top of the eighth, Rachel Shotzbarger used a sacrifice bunt to get Howerth over to third, and Reyes brought her in with a sacrifice fly to left field.



-Riley now has 28 strikeouts in just three games this season. She tied the program record for strikeouts in a season last year with 167.

-Riley has also thrown two complete games while racking up 20.2 innings pitched.

-Wieczorek, Howerth, and Holzman all registered doubles in the win today, with Wieczorek and Howerth also scoring Monmouth’s two runs.

-The Hawks only struck out three times during the game, and forced Eastern Kentucky’s pitcher into 126 total pitches.

-Reyes went 0-for-0 in the contest after getting hit by a pitch twice and hitting the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth.



The Hawks will have 12 days off before their next game, which is scheduled for March 3 in Washington, DC. Monmouth will compete in the George Washington Colonial Classic to take on George Washington and Bucknell throughout the weekend.
