MONMOUTH SOFTBALL EARNS CLUTCH VICTORIES OVER CHATTANOOGA AND BETHUNE COOKMAN

CLEARWATER, FL – Behind some timely hitting and strong defensive plays, the Monmouth University softball team defeated Tennessee at Chattanooga, 9-6, before earning the 9-8 win against Bethune Cookman on Friday. Senior shortstop Rachel Shotzbarger led the way against the Mocs, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run. Freshman 2B Deangie Jimenez steered Monmouth to the win against Bethune Cookman, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs. The Hawks improved to 5-12 on the season with both wins, and will look for two more victories as they take on Yale and North Florida.

-On an inning that included three walks, Monmouth’s all-time leader in doubles, Rachel Shotzbarger, gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead in the first inning with another double that scored Reyes and Balderas.
-In the top of the second inning, Tennessee at Chattanooga took the 4-2 lead on a grand slam. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for the Mocs.
-Freshman Deangie Jimenez led off the fourth inning with a single, was bumped over to second and third, and scored after a Balderas RBI single. Reyes put Monmouth back on top 6-4 with a two-run home run in the fourth.
-The Hawks extended their lead to 8-4 in the fifth inning thanks to a Jimenez 2-RBI double that scored Amber Wozniak and Shotzbarger.
-Monmouth eventually took the 9-6 win as Kayla Rosado hit an RBI single to score Wieczorek in the sixth.
-In game two against Bethune Cookman, the Hawks took the early 1-0 lead as Reyes hit an RBI double. In the third inning, Jimenez led-off with a double and scored from a Balderas sac fly, giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
-Monmouth exploded for a six-run fourth inning. Jimenez picked up an RBI on a squeeze, Katie Baron hit a sacrifice fly, Chloe Howeth hit an RBI triple, and Holzman added an RBI single.
-Bethune Cookman got five runs back in the fifth and sixth innings, making it an 8-6 ballgame heading into the final inning.
-The Hawks added an insurance run in the top half of the seventh, as Wozniak scored on an error. Bethune-Cookman scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but a throw from Howerth to the infield ended the game at second base, ending in the 9-8 Monmouth victory.
-In game one against Tennessee at Chattanooga, Shotzbarger went 3-for-3 with 3 RBI.
-Reyes hit her second home run of the season in the game one win, picking up her 13th RBI in the process.
-Holzman walked three times in game one, also scoring a run.
-Six different Hawks picked up one RBI in the win against Bethune Cookman.
-Jimenez went 3-for-4 with two runs against Bethune Cookman.
-In the two games, Jimenez went 5-for-7 with three RBI, three runs, and two doubles.
The Hawks will play two more games today, taking on Yale at 12:00 PM before playing North Florida at 2:30 PM.
