GARNER AND SOSOO EARN MAAC TRACK HONORS
WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ- Monmouth University senior Tionna Garner (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Catholic) and junior Bryan Sosoo (Laurel, MD/Resevior) have been named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Track Performer of the Week following efforts last weekend, conference officials announced on Tuesday afternoon.
At the NY Armory, Garner took second overall in the 500m behind Sage Watson of Arizona, who ran the fastest time in world, breaking the collegiate record in 1:08.40. Garner's time of 1:11.91 is the top time in MAAC, top time in ECAC, and one of the fastest in NCAA. It is third fastest in school history behind her own school record of 1:10.31 and second fastest time of 1:11.59 both at ECAC's last year. On Saturday, Garner took fifth in the 800m with a time of 2:11.13.
Monmouth’s women’s squad finished 10th of more than 30 schools competing, featuring Oklahoma, Duke, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Maryland, Lehigh and Connecticut among others.
At the Villanova Invitational, Sosoo won the 60m after crossing the tape in 6.72 seconds. Later in the day Sosoo placed fifth in the triple jump, clearing 14.05m.
It is the third time that Garner has earned Track Performer of the Week. The MAAC Indoor Championships are set for February 18 and 19 at the NY Armory. Monmouth’s men’s team is ranked 8th in the region while the women’s team is ranked 13th.
Senior throwers Troy Andretta and Tim Wilson will compete in the weight throw at the prestigious Millrose Games on Thursday while Monmouth will host the 2017 Winter Collegiate Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the OceanFirst Bank Center.
